Soup Challenge part 2: Super bread – Super cheap, super easy, super delicious

So yesterday I blogged about the Soup Challenge and I mentioned the super bread. I made super bread and it was dead easy.

This recipe has been a braai staple of mine for years, and it is so versatile.


Basic recipe:

500g Self-raising flour

340ml (1 tub) of buttermilk

1 packet of instant soup (I use white onion or brown onion – anything without bits, really)

1 onion – liquidised


Mix everything (if the dough is too dry add a bit of milk). Do not over-mix. Bake for 40 minutes at 180 degrees celsius.


The basic recipe is good, but to make it great you need to add some things. For the Soup challenge, I added:

125g grated cheddar cheese

125 g cubed cheddar cheese

1 handful of flatleaf parsley


But you can also add:

crispy bacon

diced olives

any cheese of your choice

grated potato

mashed banana




the possibilities are endless!
